Growing Up on the Water
Siobhan grew up in County Galway. Her love for the region's
maritime culture started early — weekend visits to Galway
Docks with her grandfather shaped how she sees travel. Those
childhood walks along the quays weren't just about the
scenery. It's where she learned that travel isn't about
rushing. It's about noticing things. The light on the water.
The way boats move. Stories people tell about the place they
live.
Education & Early Career
She studied Journalism at Dublin City University, graduating
in 2008. Right after, she joined The Irish Times as a features
writer covering Irish tourism and cultural heritage. That's
where the real education happened. Working with editors who
cared about depth. Learning to find stories that mattered.
Over the next decade, she contributed to The Sunday Business
Post, Ireland's Own Magazine, and dozens of smaller
publications. Every assignment taught her something new about
how people travel — and why some experiences stick with you.
The Shift to Accessible Travel
About ten years ago, she noticed something. There's plenty of
travel writing out there. But very little of it actually
speaks to retirees. Most guides assume you can walk three
hours without stopping. Most recommendations don't mention
accessible routes or rest areas. That gap frustrated her. She
started researching accessible travel experiences — routes
that work for people with different fitness levels,
destinations that don't require scrambling over rocks, places
where you can sit down every twenty minutes without feeling
rushed. She realized she'd found her real specialty.
Recognition & Expertise
Her detailed guides to twelve Irish coastal destinations
earned recognition in the travel writing community. Two
nominations for the Irish Travel Writers' Awards followed. But
the real validation came from readers — people who said her
guides finally gave them confidence to explore places they
thought were off-limits. That's when she knew she was onto
something important.
At dailyfuelpdx Ltd
Today, she leads research and editorial development for
leisure travel content at dailyfuelpdx Ltd. She's conducted
extensive research on Galway's maritime heritage and quayside
infrastructure. The Claddagh Basin, the renovated docklands,
the broader promenade system — she knows these areas inside
and out. Not just as a writer, but as someone who's walked
them repeatedly, timing routes, identifying rest spots,
photographing accessible pathways. Her work combines rigorous
research with something more personal: genuine care for
helping people explore places they love.
